The Golden Gate Park museum started as a Fine Arts Building in 1894 for the California Midwinter International Exhibition, which had a committee chaired by Michael H. de Young. The original building was renovated throughout the years and then replaced by a structure designed by Swiss architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron at a new location. The museum has more than 27,000 art pieces from the Americas, Africa and Oceania in addition to costumes and fabrics from Eastern and Western cultures.
