This historic building is located on the site where the Basque parliament met beneath the branches of a sacred oak tree from medieval times to 1876. The Guernica Assembly House, Casa de Juntas de Guernica, is today the seat of the General Assembly of Vizcaya and a cultural monument. After the 1937 bombing of Guernica by the Nazis during the Spanish Civil War the sacred oak was left a stump that still stands on the site as a symbol of Basque independence.
