A baroque church of Guatemala, the church was originally a male monastery in Santiago de Guatemala (known today as Antigua Guatemala), the church developed into the main church of the Guatemalan capital. After the Santa Marta earthquake in 1773 and the capital was moved to Guatemala City, much of the sculptures and artwork were moved with it to a new church. However, La Merced still stood undamaged by the earthquake and has remained open to the public to this day.
