Elaborate above-ground vaults and tombs of the former wealthy residents of the Garden District are contained in this New Orleans cemetery as well as some grave sites of famous people. Lafayette Cemetery No. 1 was laid out in 1832 in a cross-pattern and named after the City of Lafayette which originally was separated from New Orleans. It now has approximately 1,100 family tombs and more than 7,000 people buried in it. Some of the more well-known individuals laid to rest in the cemetery include Judge John Howard Ferguson of the Plessy vs. Ferguson “separate-but-equal” court case, Brigadier General Harry T. Hays who headed the 1st Louisiana Brigade and the Brunie family of jazz musicians.
