Many of Moscow's metro stations are more like art museums than transit hubs. Moscow Metro features stations that are elaborately decorated with marble walls and columns, chandeliers, frescoes and artwork. It has 196 stations and 12 lines running more than 200 miles, and is one of the busiest in the world with a high of more than nine million people riding it daily. Moscow Metro began operating in 1935 and served as bomb shelters during World War II. Many believe there's a secret "Metro 2" underground system built under Russian ruler Joseph Stalin that contains test labs, military sites and bunkers.
