Novgorod was at one time Russia's second most important city behind Kiev and was one of Europe's largest cities during the 14th century. The first historical mention of the city was in the 9th century. Novgorod's iconic St. Sophia Cathedral was constructed in 1045 and became an important religious institution for Northern Russia. The city and its monuments are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Other Novgorod points of interest are the Novgorod Kremlin, St. Nicholas Cathedral, Yaroslav's Court and Yuriev Monastery.
