The Grotto, also known as the National Sanctuary of our Sorrowful Mother, is a Roman Catholic sanctuary in Portland, Oregon. The land was purchased by Friar Ambrose Mayer in 1924 to establish a place of worship for the Catholics of Oregon. In the cliff wall on the land a cavern was carved out to house a statue of the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ and a meditation hall. The Grotto spans 62-acres and houses a botanical garden, small forest, and various trails. Just outside the Grotto is the John Fitzgerald Kennedy Memorial, a sculpture created by an unknown artist in memory of the 35th U.S. President.
